Four individuals land in a theatre. Alternately fearful or amused, they stroll around like tourists, playing and testing themselves awkwardly, under the inquisitive eye of the public. This sample of humanity, welded together by improbable situations and small ordinary accidents, gradually transforms the empty space of the stage into a universe overflowing with possibilities… and with ridiculousness.
By creating a sort of strange and playful vivarium, Alix Dufresne and Étienne Lepage shake up both social and theatrical conventions with biting stage writing. Between performance and philosophical laboratory , Malaise dans la civilization shows exuberant beings who venture to the limit of moral values. Impulses are released, rules are broken, and human nature is laid bare. Unusual, hilarious and disturbing!
